A Growing Economic Hub
Agriculture forms the backbone of Choma’s economy, with countless families and commercial farmers contributing to its dynamic value chains. Today, Choma is not only an agricultural powerhouse but also a rising center of investment and innovation.
The district recently signed a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for its Multi-Facility Economic Zone (MFEZ), opening new doors for industrial development, innovation, and employment opportunities. Additional development is underway through a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) to construct a modern shopping mall and hotel, poised to elevate Choma’s commercial landscape.
During the recent Southern Province Exposition, the President announced plans to construct an airport in Choma, a landmark development that will significantly boost connectivity, tourism potential, and investor confidence.
Welcome to Choma District, the vibrant provincial capital of Zambia’s Southern Province, a district rich in culture, opportunity, and natural beauty. Centrally located and easily accessible, Choma serves as both an administrative hub and a welcoming home to residents, visitors, and investors alike.
According to the 2022 Zambian Census, Choma District is home to 266,916 people. Administratively, it comprises two constituencies Choma Central and Mbabala and boasts 28 diverse wards, represented by 28 elected councillors (16 from Choma Central and 12 from Mbabala Constituency). Each ward contributes uniquely to the district’s energetic social and economic life.
Choma is bordered by the districts of Monze, Pemba, Namwala, Kalomo, Zimba, and Sinazongwe, positioning it strategically within the Southern Province. The district is also home to three traditional chiefdoms: Chief Cooma, Chief Mapanza, and Chief Macha, each playing a pivotal role in preserving cultural heritage and fostering community development.

Choma is famed for having some of the most breathtaking sunsets in Zambia warm, golden hues that sweep across the horizon and mirror the district’s naturally serene atmosphere. These sunsets are more than a view; they are an experience, a daily reminder of Choma’s peaceful charm.

Food lovers will feel right at home here. Choma offers a delightful blend of local cuisines and international flavors, served at popular restaurants such as Steers, Debonairs, Starskies Café, Mugg & Bean, Kiyomi, and Frenzy Foods, renowned for its mouth-watering local dishes.
At the heart of the community lies Makalanguzu Market, a vibrant space where rural farmers bring fresh produce every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. This bustling marketplace is not only an economic center but also a lively cultural hub.
Choma is also home to a rich museum, proudly preserving the history and heritage of the Tonga people and the Southern Province. It stands as a must-visit landmark for anyone seeking to understand the region’s cultural roots.
